Fayence & Tourrettes |
|
Fayence Fayence
is perched on a hillside and looks across the plains to the south. The
town was fortified, but devastated by the Saracen invasions, and only
repopulated in 1391 when the neighbouring village of Callian was destroyed.
Remnants of the old defences can still be seen. It
is a lively country town and is the hub of activity for locals, visitors
and tourists. Despite its size it has retained its charm and atmosphere.
At the heart of the historic town you will find the typical ochre houses
lining the streets with precipitous cobbled alleyways running between.
It is a great location for arts and crafts, and has a captivating market
that is definitely worth a visit, on Thursday and Saturday mornings
Tourrettes Tourrettes,
adjoining Fayence, is a peaceful village, embraced by broom and olive
trees with pleasant pedestrian areas, shady squares and narrow streets.
It has a distinctive clock tower and chateau of interesting architecture
that is now converted into apartments
Gliding Field
The
Fayence-Tourrettes gliding field is internationally renowned as the best
in Europe and is a mecca for gliding enthusiasts from all over the world.
It was founded in 1935, is open 365 days a year, and held the 1995 world
championships. For an exciting, unparalleled, eagle-eyed view of the French
Riveria and Alpes des Haute-Provence, this cannot be beaten.
